Our Personal Tips for Visiting Lisbon

Our Personal Tips for Visiting Lisbon

Travel is a source of inspiration for us, and we believe it offers a unique form of education. Having explored many countries and cities, our recent trip to Lisbon was a delightful experience that we wished we had embraced sooner. It has quickly become my favorite city to date! Here, we’ve compiled some tips and insights from our trip, hoping to help you make the most of your visit. We traveled in November, enjoying pleasant walking temperatures while still soaking in the warmth.

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal. For first-time visitors, the vibrant streets, rich history, and delicious food set the stage for an unforgettable adventure. Here’s how to maximize your experience in this charming city.

Getting There

Upon arrival, you can easily reach the city center via metro, buses, or taxis. We opted for Uber; there’s a designated pickup point just outside the arrivals area. Look for the red pillars in the parking structure and follow the signs to the Uber pickup area—it's a quick and straightforward walk.

Where to Stay

We highly recommend staying in neighborhoods like:

- Alfama: Known for its historic charm.

- Bairro Alto: Ideal for nightlife.

- Baixa: We stayed in this area at the Convent Square Hotel, which was a perfect starting point. We got a great deal on this hotel, and staying in this area is a must in my opinion. It’s a great starting point; we walked to so many attractions from here—it was a lovely area.

Each neighborhood offers its own unique vibe, giving you a different perspective of the city.

Must-See Attractions

1. Belém Tower: This iconic fortress symbolizes Lisbon's Age of Discoveries.

2. Jerónimos Monastery: A breathtaking monastery that houses the tomb of Vasco da Gama.

3. Alfama District: Strolling through the narrow, winding streets of this ancient neighborhood was one of our favorite activities. We loved stopping for meals and coffee while exploring.

4. St. George’s Castle: Climb to the top for stunning views of the city and the Tagus River. We visited on our last day before a 4 PM flight, and the views were breathtaking, though there is an entrance fee.

5. The LX Factory: A trendy area full of shops, restaurants, and street art—perfect for an afternoon adventure. We took a train there, which was a short and enjoyable trip.

Culinary Delights

- Pastéis de Nata: These delicious custard tarts are a must-try. Head to Pastéis de Belém for the most famous version.

- Bacalhau à Brás: A traditional dish featuring cod, onions, and potatoes, often found in cozy taverns.

- Time Out Market: This is a must-visit, as it features food from all the best restaurants in Lisbon in one place. It’s like a food court but fancier and has a great bar, too. You can also book cooking classes through their website.

If you’re looking for a great app for booking restaurants that are fully reviewed and offer great deals on meals and discounted set menus at fantastic restaurants, the THE FORK app is a good go-to.

Be careful when eating in high tourist areas, as the prices are much higher, and restaurants may not be highly rated. Make sure to check prices before picking a restaurant.

Getting Around

Lisbon has an efficient public transport system, including trams, buses, and the metro. Riding the iconic Tram 28 is a must, as it takes you past many landmarks. However, if you're up for it, wandering the streets is a fantastic way to soak in the city’s charm.

Tips for First-Time Visitors

Consider downloading the CITYMAPPER app; it’s incredibly helpful! It allows you to book Ubers, taxis, and provides navigation for the metro, including train times and platforms. Simply enter your destination, and it will show you all possible routes, including walking directions, making your travels stress-free.

If you plan on using public transport to get around, I would recommend buying the Lisboa Card. You can buy the card online before your trip and pick it up at arrivals when you land at the Lisboa desk—you can’t miss it. The card covers all transport and offers discounts on attraction entry, providing the best value. It’s easy to use, and there are different options on their site you can choose from. You can also pay as you go, but this is a cheaper and easier option if you plan on using public transport a lot.

- Dress Comfortably: Lisbon is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes.

- Embrace the Pace: Take your time to enjoy the atmosphere, relax at a local café, and watch life unfold around you.

Conclusion

Lisbon captivates with its stunning views, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re visiting historic sites, indulging in local cuisine, or simply enjoying the vibrant street life, your first trip to this beautiful city is sure to be memorable. So pack your bags, grab your camera, and prepare to fall in love with Lisbon!
